History of the Grand Canyon goes back 10,000 years ago. Native Americans have been living at Grand Canyon for at least the last 4,000 years.The Anasazi's first lived there and later the Puebleoans. The Cohonina, Paiutes, Cerbat and the Navajo, also lived in the canyon. Looking for The Seven Cities of Cibola, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado sent Captain Garcia Lopez de Cardenas with the help of Hopi guides to the Grand Canyon around 1540 AD. In 1869, John Wesley Powell a U.S. Army Major, led an expedition through the canyon on the Colorado Rive. The Grand Canyon became a U.S. National Park in 1919.
